Kemp Developments Ltd undertook the construction of a new Visitor Centre for the RSPB at their Bempton Cliffs Seabird reserve. The project included the partial demolition and remodeling of an existing building and two new extensions to substantially increase the size. The building provides new WC facilities, viewing deck, teaching facilities, Cafe and Offices at First Floor level – all fully DDA compliant. Undertaken to a tight timeline, the building opened on time and is exceeding the expectations of the RSPB providing a huge boost in visitors to the site.
Features included are: Underfloor heating powered by an air source heat pump, high l;evels of thermal insulation, automated access doors, a disabled platform lift to the first floor. A gabion basket wall has been constructed to create a service yard from stone which was quarried just up the coast near Scarborough.
New access paths have been installed improving access to the centre and to the cliffs as well as two car parks with provision for over 130 cars. Several thousand tonnes of earth were relocated to improve access and views of the cliffs, all under strict supervision of Ecologists to protect the wildlife on the site – in particular Great Crested Newts.
